Reaction to Iraq War Vote
By Lowell | May 25, 2007
Obviously, there’s a great deal of reaction to yesterday’s Iraq War vote on the progressive blogosphere. Here’s a sampling:
*On MyDD, Chris Bowers writes, “the ways some Democrats have screwed up in the last couple weeks– secret trade deals, Iraq funding capitulation, lobbying reform collapses–is a useful splash of cold water to remind me of how much work is left to be done in our intra-party struggles.”
*Also on MyDD, Matt Stoller calls it “Disappointing the Base Day” and “Screw the Base Day.” That pretty much sums up the sentiment at MyDD.
*On Daily Kos, Markos writes about “Moving Forward”:
Democrats have lined up to announce that this isn’t the endgame, that this is just the first round. They are promising to keep putting pressure on the administration and using other legislative vehicles to impose withdrawal deadlines and other accountability provisions.
They let us down this time. But the opportunities for them to make amends still exist.
If Democrats take advantage of them, as they promise they will, then all might be forgiven. They can prove to us that they in fact know what they are doing, and that they, in fact, do plan on honoring their most sacred promise to the 2006 electorate.
And if they don’t? Well, no one, not even the most rabid partisans, have an endless supply of patience.
*Oliver Willis calls the Iraq War bill the “Democratic Capitulation Act,” and adds, “Neville Chamberlain would be proud.”
*Matthew Yglesias agrees with E.J. Dionne that:
In a divided system, democracy can be frustratingly slow. But it usually works. Critics of the war should spend less time mourning the setbacks of May and begin organizing for a showdown in September.
*AmericaBlog writes that the “House votes to kill more U.S. troops so Bush won’t call them names.”
There’s a lot more, mainly along these lines. Lots of angry progressives today.
