The First Democratic Debate
By Lowell | April 27, 2007
Last night was the first Democratic Presidential debate leading up to the 2008 primary and general election season. Here’s a sampling of commentary on it from the progressive blogosphere:
*Taylor Marsh says it was a “very good night for Clinton.” In contrast, Marsh writes that “Obama phoned it in and lost me, especially on the details of response,” “Edwards wasn’t on his game,” and “Richardson was just plain awful.”
*MyDD discussed the debate on Blog Talk Radio. Matt Stoller says that “I’m not really getting anything from this debate, probably because I’ve been following the candidates fairly closely.”
*Daily Kos has a post-debate poll which indicates that 19% believe Edwards won, 18% believe Obama won, 12% believe Clinton won, and the rest scatter between “more than one of the above,” “none of the above,” or one of the other candidates. Mike Gravel did surprisingly well, with 10% saying he won the debate. Dennis Kucinich did surprisingly badly, with just 4% of the Daily Kos voters saying he won.
*New Donkey writes that “A quick review of the reaction in the progressive blogosphere shows a subdued take on the event,” adding that “the debate probably moved few votes, but may slightly shift the future landscape.”
*Last but not least, “scarecrow” at Firedoglake writes:
I don’t like to watch candidate debates. They just make me nervous. More important, I think they tell us too much about how well scripted a candidate is and too little about how a person will inspire and unite the country or pick the right people to manage the government. What did we learn about George Bush from his first debate?
I tend to agree, and would love to hear suggestions for alternatives.
