Giuliani Briefed on Kerik in 2000

By Lowell | March 30, 2007

Today’s New York Times has a potentially explosive story about Rudy Giuliani:

Rudolph W. Giuliani told a grand jury that his former chief investigator remembered having briefed him on some aspects of Bernard B. Kerik’s relationship with a company suspected of ties to organized crime before Mr. Kerik’s appointment as New York City police commissioner, according to court records.

Whoops.

According to MyDD, the Times “takes a look at one aspect of the myth of Rudy Giuliani and effectively shreds it to pieces.” MyDD adds that “the more important aspect of the story is that it seems to signal that the media are finally willing to take a critical look at Rudy Giuliani’s record as mayor, which hasn’t occurred in a great number of years,” since 9/11.

Meanwhile, Oliver Willis headlines the story, “Rudy Giuliani. The Mob. And Bernard Kerik.” Willis adds, “For Rudy Giuliani, when it comes to Bernard Kerik, he seems to value friendship over the safety of New York City and the United States.”

Finally, Andrew Sullivan summarizes that Giuilani “knew about Bernard Kerik’s connection to a company linked to organized crime before appointing him police commissioner.” Sullivan adds that “This is the first of what one imagines will be a series of stories about Rudy Giuliani’s record in New York City.”

Finally, in a related story, Talk Left ridicules Giuilani for saying that his wife, “Judith Nathan would be welcome to sit in on cabinet and policy meetings if he were elected President.” Talk Left writes, “How typical of his absolute arrogance.”

Can’t disagree with any of that.
