Time for Gonzales to Resign?

By Lowell | March 14, 2007

Is it time for Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to resign? So says Sen. Hillary Clinton. So says John Edwards. And so says the progressive blogosphere:

*On Talk Left, the question is “Where’s Obama? Where is Colorado Senator Ken Salazar?” and ” Even more important, where’s Rudy?”

*At Daily Kos, Hunter writes sarcastically, “A Gloved Alberto Gonzales Plans Search to Find Real Killer.” Hunter concludes, “This man should not be a dogcatcher at this point, much less Attorney General.”

*At MyDD, Jonathan Singer predicts that “the President will be forced into a position where he will have to throw one of his closest and most trusted staffers — Gonzales or Karl Rove — under the bus in the hopes of saving the other…”

*Matthew Yglesias asks “Why on earth would Alberto Gonzalez literally use the phrase “mistakes were made” with reference to sacking US Attorneys unwilling to play partisan politics with the law — is he trying to look guilty?”

On that last question, my guess is that Gonzales is guilty as sin AND is handling the situation extremely poorly. Just like he’s handled his job as Attorney General for the past two years. Heckuva job!

[UPDATE: Now this is an interesting perspective, arguing that the “US Attorneys deserved to be fired” Why? “The dirty little understory to the attorneys scandal is that none of those representatives of American justice was going to say or do anything about the politicization of their offices and the legal system in this country until they were relieved of their jobs, livelihood, and power.]
