Goodbye Gonzales?

By Lowell | March 11, 2007

The New York Times today calls for Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to be fired. Among other things, the Times charges that Gonzales “has never stopped being consigliere to Mr. Bush’s imperial presidency,” “has been central to the administration’s assault on the courts,” and “symbolizes Mr. Bush’s disdain for the separation of powers, civil liberties and the rule of law.” Besides that, he’s doing a heckuva job! Ha.

Anyway, here’s some commentary from the progressive blogs on Alberto Gonzales:

*Firedoglake has an article entitled, “Holy Festering Turdblossoms,” in which it argues, “It is well past time for some accountability.” Firedoglake adds, “how about standing up for the rule of law and the Constitution and Bill of Rights for a change?”

*At Daily Kos, mcjoan titles her post simply, “Impeach Gonzales.” She adds that although ‘Bush should force Gonzales’s resignation,” that this “is not about to happen, so this Congress must be prepared to impeach this Attorney General.”

*At MyDD, Jonathan Singer analyzes the possibility of impeaching Gonzales, writing that “In the history of the United States, the House of Representatives has only availed itself of the power to impeach federal officials seventeen times, and in only one instance has it impeached a cabinet secretary (Ulysses S. Grant’s Secretary of War William Belknap).” Still, Singer believes that attempting to impeach Gonzales “would both begin to ensure that there is some accountability for the actions of this administration — accountability that has been sorely lacking due to President Bush’s reticence to fire his incompetent personnel — and it would put Republicans on the record as defending someone whose actions have undermined the Constitution.”

*Down With Tyranny writes, “what I don’t understand is why the Democratic majorities in Congress haven’t moved to begin impeachment proceedings [against Gonzales].” And, Down with Tyranny adds, “the Democrats are in the majority” so “it’s their duty to move on this.” Good point.

So, will it be “Goodbye Gonzales,” or maybe “Adios Alberto,” before long?
