Hillary Clinton: “Running Against Straw?”

By Lowell | February 20, 2007

That’s the question asked by Matthew Yglesias, in response to the following comment Sen. Clinton made in South Carolina (minute 31 of the video clip) yesterday:

Some people may be running who may tell you that we don’t face a real threat from terrorism. I am not one of those.

Over at MyDD, Matt Stoller calls the comment “fearmongering” and asks “who exactly” among Democratic candidates does not believe terrorism is a “real threat.” He also reports that Clinton’s netroots coordinator, Peter Daou, says that Sen. Clinton “could have been referring to Republican candidates.”

Connecticut blog My Left Nutmeg calls the comment “disturbingly Liebermanesque.”

Atrios writes that he “won’t hesitate to chime in is when Dem candidates support right wing narratives about Democrats to attack their opponents.”

It will be interesting to hear what more the Clinton campaign has to say about this comment.
