Commentary on Iran and the Bush Administration
By Lowell | February 15, 2007
The Washington Post headlines today are “Skepticism Over Iraq Haunts U.S. Iran Policy” and “Iranians Aid iraq Militants, Bush Alleges: President Denies Seeking Pretext for War with Tehran.” There’s plenty of blogosphere commentary on all this:
*Oliver Willis writes that “because of the Iraq war, because of the mistakes, lies, and cooked intelligence the administration presented to us and stovepiped through the press, they have squandered that moral authority” on other foreign policy issues, like Iran. Because of this, Willis concludes, “We’ve fallen a long way, and we’re much less safer and secure because of it.”
*Art Levine at The Huffington Post asks, “While fighting the escalation in Iraq, what will progressives and Democratic leaders do to stop a potential war with Iran?”
*Over at Daily Kos, BarbinMD writes that “With anonymous briefings, accusations, shifting claims and aircraft carriers in the Persian Gulf, the case for war is being built under the guise of “protecting the troops.”
*At Talking Points Memo, Josh Marshall writes, “All the other administration bamboozlement aside, we’re now supposed to believe that the central allegation in that Baghdad Iranian arms briefing was false.” Marshall asserts that “This is the kind of goof that starts wars” and points out that “Government officials are fired for screw-ups of far less gravity.”
*Larry Johnson at Booman Tribune says:
The truth about the Iranian threat is that the Bush Administration is not telling the real truth. Like any effective propagandist President Bush is using a kernel of truth and, with the help of many in the media, laying the foundation for another war. Only this time it will likely be a war of retaliation rather than one of pre-emption.
There’s lots more commentary on this issue, and I’m sure there will be a lot more. All coming to a progressive blog near you! ![]()
