North Korea Deal Commentary

By Lowell | February 13, 2007

North Korea reportedly has agreed to a deal in which it will shut down its main nuclear reactor in exchange for food, fuel, etc. from South Korea, China, Russia and the United States. Here’s some reaction from the progressive blogosphere:

*At the Booman Tribune, the verdict is that “The White House has made its first solid foreign policy accomplishment since, at least, they convinced Syria to withdraw troops from Lebanon.”

*Matthew Yglesias says that this is “good news,” but also points out “that we could have gotten a better version of this deal years and years ago had Bush and Cheney not stomped on it.”

*The Washington Note says that “this is a nice does of good news for once,” but cautions that the deal “could still blow up. ”

*Over at Huffington Post, Adam Hanft writes that the deal “is nothing more and nothing less than an economic bribe…”

* Democracy Arsenal credits three “less-sung heroes” for this deal: 1) the Chinese; 2) the U.S. Foreign Service; and 3) the American people.
